National coalition meeting “Empowering Refugee-Led Organizations to Support Refugee Integration in Bulgaria”

The NIEM project in Bulgaria has focused on supporting refugee-led initiatives which support refugee integration. Therefore, on 8 January 2022, a national coalition meeting “Empowering Refugee-Led Organizations to Support Refugee Integration in Bulgaria” took place in Sofia. The event was organized by Multi Kulti Collective, Bulgarian Council on Refugees and Migrants and UNHCR.

The event gathered 11 participants, including stakeholders from Bulgaria, as well as refugee community leaders from Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Yemen. The event was designed to support their initiatives as a refugee-led organization called Refugee Advisory Board which had been established in December 2021.

The event had a professional facilitator, Vanya Ivanova, PhD, who used the British Council Active Citizens methodology and led the group through the following steps:

1. My Identity and Culture
2. Me and You – Intercultural Dialogue
3. Local and Global Communities
4. Planning and Delivering Social Action Plan

The goal of the meeting was to empower participants as leaders, to support them in developing community dialogue, as well as to help them create ideas for social actions aimed at  promoting refugee integration in various ways – in the field of education, employment, social assistance, cultural mediation, etc.

The event was organized within the project “NIEM - National Integration Evaluation Mechanism” funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund of the EU.
