NIEM partnership conference in Brussels

On June 20, to mark World Refugee Day, the NIEM partnership organized the conference “Refugee integration in the EU - What next? European Conference on monitoring and improving policies” in Brussels, Belgium.
Luca Barani (European Commission, DG Migration and Home Affairs), Begüm Dereli (European Council on Refugees and Exiles), Sophie Magennis (UNHCR Regional Representative for EU Affairs in Brussel), and Janina Ochojska (Member of the European Parliament) joined the expert panel discussion about current challenges EU member states face in terms of increased forced migration from Ukraine and implementation of temporary protection directive; what kind of support the European Union can provide to member states during the humanitarian crisis; what solutions might improve integration support for beneficiaries of international protection in all member states. The selectivity of national integration policies and deepening disparities in access to support and integration assistance were highlighted as a sufficient barrier that hampers social cohesion and the improvement of rights and public participation of asylum seekers and recognizes refugees. The panelists agreed about the importance of the public authorities’ approach to reception and integration as a comprehension system.

The leaders of refugee communities shared their experiences about activities they provide locally to strengthen displaced people's advocacy and public participation and how to strengthen the involvement of forced migrants in consultations and policymaking toward a more efficient and inclusive integration policy.
