Openness. Humanity. Security. World Refugee Day 2017

The association “Gribu palīdzēt bēgļiem” (I Want to Help Refugees) and the think-tank “Providus” in cooperation with the UNHCR Northern Europe and the Media Centre of Stockholm School of Economics in Riga organises an event dedicated to the World Refugee Day, taking place at Stockholm School of Economics in Riga on 20 June at 15:00. The event will also host the seventh Living Library with Rigans, asylum seekers and refugees; however, this time they will be accompanied by people whose parents or grandparents had had to leave Latvia for various reasons and by those who have been involved in the introduction of the asylum system to Latvia in 1990s. After listening to the stories during the Living Library everyone will be given the opportunity to ask questions, and the event will end with a discussion round on the impressions gained.

The event will also allow you to take a virtual tour around a refugee camp by using special virtual goggles, and to learn about the recent global trends in migration, as well as to try Middle Eastern dishes cooked by the Hummus Team.

The World Refugee Day is celebrated each year on 20 June to raise awareness on refugee issues throughout the world and to support and show solidarity to those who have left their homes and started new life abroad for various reasons. It is important to learn from our experience and to identify the contemporary challenges and possibilities; therefore, the life stories presented during the Living Library will be a significant source of information allowing learning about the human and the individual in the broader topic related to asylum.
